Much of the street lighting in Blundellsands is showing its age. Many roads are poorly lit and the lights themselves are not energy-efficient.
Where individual lighting columns and lights are corroded they are being replaced with new energy-efficient LED's. These provide an improved quality of lighting and cost less to run.
However, we need a planned programme to replace our older street lighting across the ward. This can be funded by an interest free loan which would be repaid over 5 years from the savings in energy costs.
Local Authorities nationally need to focus more on Life Cycle Planning to get the best out of their highways assets, which ultimately can lead to reduced expenditure.
Speaking this week Conservative candidate for Blundellsands Martyn Barber said: "If elected as your Ward Councillor I would ask Sefton's Engineers to carry out a feasibility study to examine a self-funding programme of street lighting,as other local authorities have done.
I would also press for a review of our road markings, especially at road junctions. Blundellsands is extensively used by Learner drivers and many of our road markings are indistinct.
