Conservatives have been at the forefront of scrapping, once and for all, Sefton’s Labour Council’s plans for a coastal cycle path in Crosby and Waterloo between Blundellsands Road West and Great George’s Road.
Councillor Joe Riley told Sefton’s planning committee it would “be like putting a Formula One racetrack through a multi-use recreational area.”
Councillor Riley added: “it’s not a case of not being in favour of more facilities for cyclists. The point here is that this is not an appropriate area.
The proposal would have given pedestrians priority and even required cyclists to dismount if necessary.
“This takes no account of human nature,” added Councillor Riley. “We do not live in some bygone era of chivalry and courtesy. Speeding cyclists and family picnics and children’s play areas are not a permissible mix.”
