The Merseyside Conservative Ladies Luncheon Club were delighted to welcome the Right Honourable Lord Hunt of Wirral, MBE as the guest speaker at their Christmas lunch at The Liner Hotel in Liverpool on 1st December 2023.
Lord Hunt was born in Wales, but spent his early life and was educated in Liverpool. He joined the Conservative Party as a Young Conservative over 65 years ago. He became the Member of Parliament for Wirral after winning a by-election in 1976. The seat was later broken up in a boundary reform, when he then became Member of Parliament for the new Wirral West constituency, in 1983.
Lord Hunt told of his long, very varied and interesting career, including serving in Mrs Thatcher’s Cabinet and under John Major, as well as Chairman of the Press Complaints Commission.
Looking forward to the next General Election, he spoke of his approval of David Cameron’s appointment as the new Foreign Secretary, after hearing his maiden speech in the House of Lords just that week, and of Lord Cameron’s popularity on the world stage. He asserted his faith in Rishi Sunak as Prime Minister and Party Leader and told the gathering why he believes that the next General Election result will look more like 1992 than 1997.
He took questions from the floor on many subjects including the war in Ukraine, the current situation in Israel, and the future of the Conservative Party, including the “rising stars” with big future political careers.
The next Merseyside Conservative Ladies Luncheon Event will be a Tour of the Shakespeare Theatre North, followed by Afternoon Tea on Friday 5th January 2024. More information and booking can be made via Alma McGing on: [email protected].
