Our biggest project yet was undertaken by the Maghull and Lydiate volunteers to tackle an overgrown alleyway in Lydiate, between Coppull Road and Southport Road.
A local resident after seeing our recent success in the Maghull champion regarding the A59 Subway clean-up got in touch to complain that this alleyway. Despite being adopted it had been left virtually abandoned by both Sefton Council and calls to Lydiate Parish council had also failed to bear fruit.
Both Maghull Town Councillors Tom and Ken Hughes, along with Young Conservatives Matthew Lock, Daniel Kirk and local residents decided to trim back the overgrown hedges, collected litter, sweep-up debris and edge the path to extend the width of the grass that had begun to overtake the concrete walkway.
Complaints were also made that the street lights along the path were being blocked by the overgrown hedges making it an unsafe place after dark, combined with the moss and wet leaves it was described as a “disaster waiting to happen.” Town Cllr Tom Hughes remarked “Hopefully after our grand clean-up this will improve the safety and enhance the local area.”
The team now known as “The Litter Louts” spent over 2 hours on this project and were surprised to hear from residents passing by that despite a few litter picks over the past few months it had been years since a transformation on this scale.
With a number of places cleaned up over the past few months, the “Litter Louts” along with Maghull and Lydiate Conservatives are prepared to work along side with Maghull town council officers and Maghull in Bloom volunteers to maintain these areas. Some volunteers of the “Litter Louts” have even agreed to each independently maintain a small area that has been completed by volunteers in recent months every few weeks, to make sure standards are kept.
Both Maghull Town Cllr’s express their deepest gratitude and thanks to all the “Litter Louts” for giving up their free time to help the community. And both hope to maintain this scheme for the foreseeable future.
