MESSAGE FROM TOWN CLLRS TOM HUGHES & KEN HUGHES
Dear Local Residents,
Throughout the past months, with the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic it has proved a tough challenge for local residents and business alike. Maghull and Lydiate Conservatives send our sincere condolences to all the victims, families and friends affected by this pandemic.
With the rule of six being enforced, Maghull Town council has had to cancel all events that were due to be organised this year as part of the borough of culture. This has extended to council meetings and committees, which have taken place on online video conferencing where public participation would be in the form of pre-prepared questions and the ability to livestream the meetings.
The contentious issue related to the new Land East of Maghull development. Both Conservatives Cllr’s supported the motion of Option 6 which passed unanimously, which proposed that a through road for construction traffic must be built before any development starts to ensure that construction traffic will not travel through any part of Maghull especially Poverty Lane. Cllr Ken Hughes also challenged that the Railway bridge on Poverty lane would be unsuitable due to the weight restriction of the bridge. This led to a further inquiry by Landor planning development which proved Cllr Ken Hughes concern, which ruled out using the Poverty lane bridge.
There has also been a new initiative by Maghull and Lydiate Conservatives. This was the clean-up campaign. Cllr Tom Hughes has been concerned about the subway adjacent to Maghull Square. For the past 18 months it has been virtually abandoned by Sefton Council, whether that be the overgrown hedges, graffiti, litter and how unsafe people are feeling whilst walking through it. So along with Cllr Ken Hughes, Matthew Lock (Young Conservatives Chairman), Denise Dutton and local resident Brian Morton local Conservatives took up the course by cutting the hedges, removing litter and sweeping the subway. We were pleased that passers-by were generally supportive.
After the previous success of the Maghull Subway, the team begin the clean-up in other grot spots. Which included Tree view court and Moorhey shops in which the grass was cut, and litter was collected. We were pleased that residents and businesses alike were supportive of this initiative once again. The next day saw the team tackling Stafford Morton way in which the hedges outside Maghull health centre were trimmed and the cut through between the Morrison’s and the A59 was given a new lease of life. Maghull and Lydiate Conservatives will be looking to maintain all theses areas and will be on the lookout for other grot spots.
Maghull and Lydiate Conservative invite residents to get involved with the clean-up initiative or bring forward any complaints or concerns they feel relevant, no matter how large or small they may be.
