Formby’s ‘Land Army’ of Conservative councillors and helpers tackling Grot Spots have completed their biggest challenge so far - clearing the Post Office garden.
The 1920s Royal Mail building is the finest example of period architecture in the village. But the adjoining plot had become a jungle of undergrowth.
That was before our trusty band of volunteers advanced with hedge-cutters, strimmers and lawn mower to give it a much-needed make-over.
The exercise, taking up two full morning sessions, resembled a green version of the Texas chainsaw massacre. But the result was a pleasing patch of shrubbery and grass on the approach to the shops.
It’s the third such blitz on neglected sites, the others being at Harington Road shops and at the entrance to Freshfield Station.
Parish Councillor Joe Riley, candidate for Harington Ward in next May’s Sefton MBC elections, said: “The Post Office garden is our most high profile project to date. “It’s an important milestone, as it is the first thing visitors see when entering the village from the station end.
“And there is no doubt that it has made a difference, with one hundred percent approval from the many passers-by.”
